HaWaC School Athletics Development..............
Over a number of years, HaWaC's role has been a successful programme of athletic development in local primary and secondary schools going back over 35 years. This first began in 1989 with four secondary girls schools from Hertford and Ware when the Nicky Morris Challenge was established and was held in 1990. Five years later an equivalent competition was established for boys. An extension of this was coaching sessions for secondary school pupils in a number of technical events such as hammer throwing, hurdles and pole vault. Alongside this with various grants were obtained for training of young leaders.
Various forms of athletic activities began to take place in primary schools, which eventually led to sportshall athletics activities and competitions, together with an annual cross country competition.
The 2004 a grant was also used to establish a pentathlon championship for Lee Valley secondary schools and this is still run annually today
By 2013, further grants were obtained that enabled HaWaC to obtain a £10,000 grant to purchase a complete range of sportshall equipment, and as a result a secondary school sportshall league for secondary schools was established at Wodson Park. which is still in operation today.
Similar primary schools activities followed, and this was extended to use by the whole of the Hertfordshire schools competitions.
These days the majority of time is spent working with secondary schools, whether its running and organising competitions, pupil coaching workshops, teacher development, or young leader training. HaWaC's philosophy of working to the principals of developing run, jump and throw, is born out by its pentathlon championships sponsored by HARLO the Sports Performance Drinks supplier.
